Efficient Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes via Photoluminescence Enhancement

Matching electron and hole current achieves record external quantum efficiency of 11% and brightness of 9040 cd/m2 in the YCl3 incorporated blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs).

Scientific Achievement

We enhanced the efficiency of blue PeLEDs with bimolecular additives (phenylethylammonium chloride and yttrium chloride), both of which can enhance the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the perovskite films. As a result, a record external quantum efficiency of 11% and brightness of 9040 cd/m2 were realized. 

Significance and Impact

The efficiencies of the green and red color PeLEDs have been increased to their theoretical upper limit, while the efficiency of blue PeLEDs is lagging far behind. Here, we enhance the efficiency of blue PeLEDs by overcoming a major hurdle of low photoluminescence quantum efficiency from wide-bandgap perovskites.
